Gallien

It is my personal opinion that Gallien did not call the police for a few different reasons. First and foremost I think that there is a strong possibility that people who live in places like Alaska take a much more "mind your own business" approach to life. Therefore Gallien did not deam it his responsibility or his right to call the police and interrupt Chris' journey. It is also very plausible that Gallien thought Chris would realize much sooner than he did that he did not belong in the wild. He may have assumed that Chris would only spend a few days in the woods before retreating back to civilization, thus figuring "he'd be OK." Other than that I do not see any reason why Gallien would call the police. It was Chris' decision to go into the woods. If Gallien could not stop him why bother bringing in the authorities. I have to admit I would not have called either, although I never would have picked up a hitchhiker in the first place.

  1. From a lot of the articles I read about Chris, it seemed like, yes Alaskans do have that approach to life. Apparently they say something like "Pulling a Chris McCandless" when someone is running away or something. ahha. I agree then that Gallien was probably just like "Well good luck out there" all sarcastically because he probably had no idea what was going to happen to Chris. And also Chris was only like a few miles from the highway so he definitely could've made it back to civilization.

  2. Yeah that's definitely a good point about Alaskan's attitude towards strangers. I'm sure that could have had a lot to do with his decision. But I like your point about Gallien thinking he'd probably only be there for a few days and make it back to the highway. I feel like that's a pretty realistic view for anyone who would have heard Chris' plans. I mean I'd only last a few hours.
